OLYMPIC FAREWELL POTLUCK PARTY!
Dust off those recipe cards and whip something special up in the kitchen. Ransack your closet and proudly don some red, white and blue. Then come on over and join us for the best smalltown, all-American party in Sedona!
The Sedona Community Center traditionally hosts this biggest and warmest Olympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies in town. Following in that tradition, we hope you’ll be joining us for our farewell party Sunday evening.
From six until ten, you are invited to the Center to watch and wonder at the XXIX Olympic Games Closing Ceremony..
The ceremonies are broadcast in high definition. Imagine the live images streaming from Beijing being projected in HD on our two huge screens complete with theatre-quality surround sound.
Our Opening Ceremony event was stellar. Attended by members, local residents and visitors alike, 80 people spent the evening sharing laughter, tears and awe as the evening unfolded. Both theaters were available so participants had a choice in chairs, sound level and neighbors.
American flags were distributed to every participant so that the audience shared in the fanfare when Team USA entered the stadium. And every attendee ended up with their very own gold medal.
SCC’s Restaurant Partners supported the event in grand style. The all-you-can-eat buffet featured salad from the Hideaway Restaurant, salad and pizza from Picazzo’s, pastas from Heartline Café and Joey Bistro, and fresh gourmet pies from the Oak Creek Brewery.
Tickets were had at the door for a suggested donation of $10 a piece. Approximately $500 was raised in emergency support of our Meals on Wheels program.
Before the parade of nations, every one in attendance filled out a card of questions regarding the outcome of certain events during the Games. The gaming tickets with the best predictions will be placed into a hat for a final drawing. The winner of our grand prize will be announced during the closing festivities.
This Sunday, we open our doors once again. But this time, admission will not be charged, other than the request that you bring a dish of potluck that will serve approximately ten people. If everyone participates, another grand buffet will be enjoyed.
We encourage you to bring some buddies and make a few new ones. Four hours of top-notch, live broadcast entertainment, with party favors, food and gaming, are our gift to the community.
However, we do encourage ongoing donations to Meals on Wheels as we are working harder than ever to keep this program strong. No reservations required, the doors open at 6:00. And as always, we recommend carpooling.
The energy and emotionalism that always surround this event are best experienced with friends and neighbors. While it may be more comfortable to stay at home and watch the Olympic experience unfold in your living room, we say this much-anticipated event needs to be watched in community. And that, of course, is what the Sedona Center is all about!
SCC’s social services include home-delivered Meals on Wheels. Our program participant list continues to grow exponentially, in Sedona and especially in the Village of Oak Creek. Delivered by a devoted fleet of volunteer drivers, these folks deliver compassion and respect along with every meal.
Our Community Lunch is served at the center Monday through Friday at noon. This program is made possible by our generous kitchen staff, our civic-minded Restaurant Partners and is served by volunteers. Please consider joining the Center’s service programs by becoming a lunch server.
Our Transportation program gives senior adults “door-to-door” service to the store, bank and doctor Monday through Friday between 9 and 2. Our professional drivers are the most kind and caring in the business.
Our Telecare program provides daily telephone calls to individuals in need of a wellness check seven days a week. This vital service is available free-of-charge to all Sedona-area residents and is provided by concerned volunteers.
For more information, to volunteer or to make reservations for our classes, events or social services, call 282-2834. We are located at the corner of Harmony Drive and Melody Lane in West Sedona.
